Common Questions
Who needs to verify their identity with Companies House?
All company directors and Persons with Significant Control (PSCs) must verify their identity before the company can file its Confirmation Statement. This applies to all UK registered companies.
How long does identity verification take?
Digital verification takes just 5-10 minutes online. Video call verification takes 15-20 minutes by appointment. After verification, Companies House typically issues your Personal Code within a few days.
What is a Personal Code?
A Personal Code is a unique identifier issued by Companies House after your identity has been verified. You'll use this code when filing documents with Companies House. One code works for all your directorships and PSC positions.
I'm both a director and a PSC - do I need to verify twice?
No! One verification covers all your roles. Whether you're a director, PSC, or both across multiple companies, you only need to verify once.
What documents can I use for verification?
For digital verification, you can use a biometric passport, UK/EU driving licence, BRP, or EU ID card. For video call or in-person verification, you'll need one photo ID plus a supporting document like a utility bill or bank statement.
What happens if I don't verify my identity?
Your company won't be able to file its Confirmation Statement until all directors and PSCs have verified their identities. This could lead to penalties and potential removal from the Companies House register.
